Health Insurance In Spain

This cover is national coverage and you will be entitled to use 100% of private hospitals in Spain.

The difference from co payment cover is there is NO EXCESS, meaning you never pay towards any service, it is 100% free.

There is also a standard cover abroad for emergencies. This is usually 12000 euros of cover internationally.

This is national cover with Co-payment (excess) where the insured person pays towards the consultation or medical operation.

This is an affordable option and very worthwhile if you rarely are sick.

International cover is a complex product and there are may insurers offering very different options.

International policies include 100% cover with no excess in Spain. Cover outside of Spain can have no excess or not.

In most cases a 10% or 20% excess will be applied in out of network centers in Spain and world wide. This means the insurance company will cover the majority of the bill and you will have to pay the excess. 

Yes medical insurance is required to gain an NIE in Spain and residence. It is necessary to purchase a no copayment (no excess) policy. 

Monthly options are possible - Unless you require the policy to gain residence, then annual cover is needed.

Which one is right for you will depend on two key things - your health and your age. In the last year or so if you are looking to become resident there is a further deciding factor. 

If you require Health Insurance for Residency

As well as having no copayment and unlimited healthcare, the accepted health insurance policy for residence must also be active for 12 months. This will limit who you can choose as many companies renew on the 1st of Jan. This means if you take a policy out in March then the policy will not be for 12 months and therefore not acceptable for a residency application. 

Do not worry however we have an extensive list of top providers that have adapted to this new requirement and do full 12 month policies. 

Lastly some companies have a 6 month wait time when you join for a non-emergency. This has potential to be a problem for a visa application if you are only going for a 1 year visa. Again we have options for you and can offer policies that have full cover from day 1 with no wait times, even for non emergencies and tests.
